Over the past five years, the Republican Party has created wedge issues to divide the country and distract the voters from their real agenda. While claiming the mantle of "family values," they've systematically dismantled the rights and protections our country has established over many decades to actually value families.
Now the results of that misguided Republican agenda are only too visible:
- Budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthiest that came at the expense of health care, education, and pension protection for all Americans
- An unprecedented assault on our environment, including letting industry lobbyists write EPA rules on mercury pollution and opening our most cherished wilderness to drilling by their big oil friends
- Our young men and women sent to war in Iraq based on misinformation and without a clear plan for winning the peace
And let's not forget, this President repeatedly told the American people that he would be a uniter, not a divider. Yet his approach to the federal judiciary has been the most partisan, divisive, and cynical of any President during my 32 years in Congress. At every turn where he could have worked with Senators in the process, he has chosen confrontation.
I am far more interested in taking care of the tough issues facing our country and our world than I am in engaging in partisan warfare. But, I will not walk away -- not now, not ever -- from a fight to defend the basic principles that have made our democracy a model for other nations to follow.
That's why I've founded Green Mountain PAC -- an organization that will join us together to fight for the issues that will put America back on the right track, while electing Democratic candidates at all levels of government to get us there.
