Mark and Tom
06/26/2008
The Democratic Party has chosen its nominee for President, and I could not be more thrilled about our prospects. Barack Obama will rise above the partisan politics that have given us eight years of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, reintroduce America to the world, and restore our Constitution as the law of the land.
While the presidential race will rightfully receive much national attention, we also can't lose sight of candidates running in all the important ''down-ticket'' races -- so we can expand our Democratic majorities in the House and Senate and work together with President Obama to start getting America back on track in 2009.
Rep. Mark Udall in Colorado and his cousin Rep. Tom Udall in New Mexico are two such candidates. Mark and Tom are running for U.S. Senate seats currently held by Republicans and could move us 2 steps closer to a 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority. So let's make sure they win.

Last names aren't all Mark and Tom have in common. The Udalls have built reputations in the House of Representatives as legislators who never shy away from an important fight, and who know how to get things done by putting statesmanship before partisanship.
But they both face tough races from Republicans desperate to keep these open seats in their column, so I'm asking you and the entire Green Mountain PAC online community to pitch in and add two more Democrats to our ranks in the Senate.

While John McCain and the Republicans in Congress obsess about expanding oil drilling off our national coastlines, we need to elect Tom and Mark Udall, who for years have led the fight in Congress to expand renewable energy production. In particular, they have worked tirelessly to enact a renewable energy portfolio standard, which would require utilities to generate at least 20 percent of the electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
It's fitting that Vermonters and the Green Mountain PAC community should support two Senate challengers who serve two great Mountain West states with unrivaled green credentials.

I sincerely hope Mark and Tom Udall can join me in the Senate next year. We need their voices and their leadership to overcome Republican filibusters and help us get America back on the right track.
Thank you in advance for your support of their campaigns.
Sincerely,
 Patrick Leahy U.S. Senator
